Do your dogs make you feel safe?

Question:
I'm sitting here.. not being able to sleep and i'm seeing shadows on my walls from the tv in the other room playing...
now normally i'd get a little creeped out but Riot is right by my feet sleeping.
and I'm completely safe, secure and happy.
I never go anywhere without Riot now. Hes my little guardian with fur :)
With Riot by my side, I feel like I always have backup, or a little alarm if anything were to happen.
Hes always there for me, always looking for me when I'm not here...
There are no words to describe what a relief it is to have him with me :)
I remember when he was only 6 months old we were walking downtown at night and some guys came out of an alley dressed in all black smoking pot and started to walk towards me. Riot took one look at them and lunged at them growling. (Thank GOD he was on a leash). Even though he was still a pup, he was a big pup and the guys run off back down the ally...
scared the crap out of me. I'd never seen Riot act like that before.. he was nippy as a pup with strangers but NEVER like that lol
Hes such a good boy for me as well. I'm usually the only person he'll take 100% of his commands from! lol He frustrates my mom to no end - she'll ask him to do a command and 75% of the time he'll listen to her, the other 25% he stares blankly at her like "why would I do that for you?"
lol I remember when my sister came into the house late one night. she had a heavy coat on and a dark hat that covered her face. Riot didn't recognize her and wouldn't let her in the house until I told him "off" and tell kate to talk to him lol She was scared stiff! lol
Defiantely makes ME feel safe with Riot around. :)
Answer:
You insomniac!! Whatcha doing up so late or is it early? LOL
Me do I feel safe like you do with Riot...HA! I own labs! LOL
They are about as scary as a butterfly! Just as vicious! LOL
Answer:
Oh yeah! I feel extremely safe and secure with Rocky. I used to carry around a knife whenever I'd go for a walk or go outside, pretty much everywhere, I was pretty paranoid.
Rocky took my knifes place and pretty much took care of my paranoia.
Answer:
I can't say that my older Lab is vicious or scares people...LOL...but she does make me feel safer for the simple fact that if ANYONE tries to come in or knocks on the door she'll bark until I tell her to stop and we see who it is. :)
She's kind of a half-as*ed watch dog. She'd never attack or hurt anyone, but she'll bark. It makes me feel good at night cause I'm by myself during the week...Tony is a truck driver. It's good to know that no matter what time it is, if someone tries to come in she'll let me know. Granted, I'd still have to defend myself if they got in....but she's my early warning system. :) LOL
Answer:
my dog makes me feel more vulnerable financially and mentally. but i still love her
Answer:
Yup. Dakota's not a guard dog by any means, but if I were an intruder I would choose another house to invade when confronted with those teeth of his.
I definitely feel safer with my dogs than I would without them.
Answer:
Definately feel safer
Answer:
Only an idiot would walk into my house uninvited .. *L* .. the sign on my door says "be aware that there are German shepherds and chow chows on the premises".
Five dogs greet them at the door, barking. Yes, I feel pretty safe.

Answer:
I feel very safe, and love that my kids have a built in body guard.
Answer:
I love Zeus and Voodoo dearly and they're great companions, but I honestly don't feel safer around them. While somewhat intimidating visually (Zeus is pretty large, and people tend to think that Voodoo is a pit bull), they have absolutely zilch guarding instinct. Everyone is their friend. They don't even bark when a stranger is at the door.
Answer:
Yes I feel very safe with Casey around. Before we moved here she wasn't allowed to sleep in my bedroom at night so I could never go to sleep with my back facing the open space, I don't know why I didn't like it, I just didn't. Now she sleeps by my bed and I will gladly sleep with my back to open space.
Also people always wonder why I'm so willing to go for walks on my own at night, the reason is Casey. She's such a friendly dog but ever since she charged and growled at the guy who was making his way towards me (she was threatening him because he had changed his direction after having a few glances up and down the area and had then focused his gaze on me, I was less than comfortable at him moving towards me) I know that she would protect me.
Answer:
My girl's a good watchdog, and the only reason I'm ever afraid on walks is for her safety around aggressive loose dogs. Plus, she chases away ghosts.
Answer:
I have a lab who is a big baby but he keeps watch over the yard and house - seems to think that is his job. He has a really deep bark and is quite protective of my wife. He spends all night laying in the kitchen looking out over the back yard. One night I came home late and I was kinda nervous about opening the door. He was barking and jumping at the windows. I know he wouldn't hurt anyone but the show he puts on is pretty good.
Answer:
I feel very safe with my group. Spike and Maggie would definately chew on someone's ankles.
Answer:
My wife and I were walking our son last night, and we had our male golden retriever/german shepherd, Slim (he's not slim, but that's his name anyways lol). with us. We were kind of out of our neighborhood and nearing a gravel road when one of our neighbors stopped to talk to us. Soon, five stray dogs walked up. We didn't think much of them, because they didn't seem vicious. Slim just sat there while the other dogs sniffed around him. Then one of the strays made the mistake to sniff our son in his stroller. Slim immediately jumped up and tore into the stray dog. Had I not had control of his leash, there would've been a Royal Rumble last night. Anyway, it's nice to know that Slim won't let anything happen to our son.
Answer:
I have for MANY years slept soundly and peacefully, with windows open in good weather.
Several Rottweilers scattered about sleeping does tend to make one feel more secure, even if it's an illusion.
;)
Answer:
I also sleep VERY well with my Rotties close by. I am sure you can imagine the noise level when someone comes within 10 feet of my house. 5 Rotties at various windows would dicourage even the most determined burglar. The only way someone would attemp to break in is if they had a death wish. Funny thing is they would get mauled. With kisses that is! :)
Answer:
Yes. My dogs all have the equivalent of a set of steak knives in their mouths.
Answer:
Are you kidding? With the Riot Grrrls and Bimmer? We don't even lock doors at night, lol!
If I hear something outside at night, I just take a Monster or two with me, and if I'm going to be on the road at night, I have one of them riding shotgun. Filas = No Fear :D
Answer:
i always feel a little safer, even when im just walking charlie (my bichon) Lol, its the same feeling you get if you walk with a friend instead of alone, I know that charlie will give up anything to keep my safe and that he loves me more than anyone, and dispite his size, he has a heart bigger than most people. I dont think its really the breed of a dog that matters, its their undying devotion to people that makes us feel safe.
Answer:
I can hear it now, the smirks, the laughs, because of the thought of little poodles making someone feel safer, but they do. :p I’m not expecting them to attack any intruders but just knowing in the middle of the night while in bed if I hear a noise that I’m not familiar with that they will react if it was something to be concerned about. Maybe I’m naïve or feel like I live in a safe area but I rarely feel afraid of the thought that an intruder will break into my home, especially when my husband is there. But when he’s away on business I do like the thought of the dogs being there as my little house alarm.
Answer:
I feel very safe with my 9 week old puppy, lol. No really with my Dobie I feel secured, I used to be a very paronoid person but with him I feel safe. No one messes with me anymore.
Answer:
I don't feel safe at all with my little 4lb mix.... unless I'm being attacked by a cricket or something, then maybe.... or if the intruder has Claustrophobia..... because she tends to smear your face with wet kisses....and you get that feeling of not being able to breath....lol :) :) :)
Answer:
Filas = No Fear :D
I hear that...
I would love to see someone try to come in my house uninvited.:D I mean, Rhueben would just lick em to death, but Demi... that's a whole other story.

Oh, don't worry! I'm not laughing at you at all! Your poodles certainly do more than my two. :p
But I guess I was wasn't quite accurate. While I know that my boys won't bark or actually be defensive, it is comforting to know they're with me.
Answer:
Yup. Sawyer lets me know when there is something that needs watching, as he gets very alert and tense. He gives little warning woofs too. His posture is enough to warn people off. I don't know what he would actually do if someone broke in, but I would defininely get a warning first.
Aubrey barks to alert, barks when she sees someone, barks when she hears someone. She looks like a 6 mo old Rottie pup so people tend to cross the street at night when they see me out walking her.
Answer:
I feel VERY safe with Chico. One time when he was about 6 months old I was putting gas in my grandmother's car and left him in the car with the window all the way down. So I'm turned around facing the pump not paying attention to anything around me and the next thing I know I see Chico flying out of the window barking and snarling and I'm like WTF?? and I turned around and this weird looking guy was behind me looking very suspicious. He immediately froze and told me to call my dog off. I was in shock that my little puppy acted the way he did but from that day on I feel very safe with Chico with me. And I never go anywhere without him.
Answer:
billw84 that pic is priceless!
I feel pretty safe dogs or not. Gunnar definitely makes my wife feel safer when I'm gone doing band gigs and not getting home till late. He doesn't bark at everything but sometimes certain sounds will get him going, and his bark shakes the floor, lol.
When I'm walking him I don't worry about anything. Most people give us a wide berth- a 6', 250lb man with a 90lb "police dog" as most people call him. If they decide to cross the street, cool by me. They don't need to know that both of use are nice. :)

Giny, I understand...while I know I will always be safe with my Fila and my Rottie, my two little ones would do their best to deter anyone. Probably the first to bite the ankles, then run like crazy and let the big ones take over. But just having dogs in the house does give one a sense of comfort. They all bark and will alert you.
Answer:
totally safe. And the funny thing is that when steve is gone the dogs, well mikey and nanook, are much more on the alert. When the MAN is home they sleep like babes. lol
Answer:
Deffinately feel safer especially when walking both of the boys! OC has already proven to me that he will step up when the need is there so it sets me at ease.
Answer:
I have an almost 12 month old Australian Cattle dog who has been very protective of me and my daughter since he was 4 months old. He is everything an ACD is and they are naturally suspicious of strangers and always on guard. I am an avid hiker and go in the woods alot so I feel very safe with him plus my pepper spray just in case ;) He has proven himself to me a couple of times while hiking. Don't get me wrong because he is very socialized with people and loves other dogs but he is what he is and I'm glad he is protective. :D
Answer:
I feel very safe with Charlie. Like Red ACD said, ACDs are suspicious of strangers and very protective of their owners. :D
Answer:
my dog makes me feel more vulnerable financially and mentally. but i still love her
Ditto..I always feel like I have to protect my dogs. If someone came in my house I would be most afraid that one of my dogs would get hurt.

My pride acts the same way when Charley's out of town. Of course, that means they growl at every single strange noise . . . out in the country . . . And if the coyotes are having booty call they go crazy. My sleep gets a bit scarce sometimes  But I know I'm perfectly safe
Answer:
Yup, my dogs are much more alert when my parents leave. Almost obnoxiously so - they usually spend a few hours barking, every day.
Answer:
I feel safe with Molly, not so much with Lucy though, don't really think a 3 pound dog is too intimidating. :D Molly would probably be terrible at protecting me--but she at least makes me feel safer! I can't sleep if she's not in my room with me. While I doubt she would be good for protection, she would at least alert me if something wasn't right. As long as she is peacefully asleep, I'm not too worried. :)
Answer:
no not at all, first sign of trouble they both run away.I`m sure my presence makes them feel safe and secure but not the other way round.
Answer:
Lol. Bear protective.

Answer:
Tango...not at all...lol. She's afraid of the world, s much so, that if I get startled or afraid of something she'll instantyl start to shake and hide in her camera because whatever might be bothering me, could come to get her to! Actually, it's rather pathetic but all except one of her siblings are the same way. Winston, eventhough technically he isn't mine, he's my parents, makes me feel very safe. He's always on guard and ready for action. I'm not sure what he'd actually do if a serious situation ever occured, but I know he'd try somehow t protect me/my family.
Answer:
I feel safer and my wife feels MUCH safer having the dogs when I am not around. Our dogs are young, but they are both EXCELLENT watch dogs. People can't even walk down the other side of the road without both of our dogs pitching a fit and carrying on. I wouldn't have it any other way. I want to know if someone comes around.
Answer:
I feel super safe with my dogs. Where I used to live there were shootings/beatings at least once a week. The walk to the store was only a 10 minute walk but I never did it, until I got Roxy. She's never attacked anyone, but if anyone even comes to close to me and I feel uncomfortable she makes it clear to BACK OFF!!!

Hahaha, I know what you mean. My three might be tiny, but they have big spirits and I don't think anything could get past them; they definitely sound the alarm. If there was immediate danger, I could see Panna and Cannelle getting scared, but I don't think that Mocha would ever back down. She'd definitely go after those ankles :p.
The only thing is that you can tell that they're little by their bark. A while back in November I had come home from school early and everyone else was out so it was me, my two dogs (we didn't have Cannelle at the time), and my foster dog who, although she was only 20 - 25 lbs., had a BIG bark. Anyways, I was sitting at home and my two start barking like somebody was at the door (the foster just ran to the window wiggling her little butt) so I went to the window to see who it was (I'm paranoid so all of the doors are locked anyways) and I saw some guy with one of those full face masks coming up the stairs (on a fairly warm day) and then I heard a loud BANG at the door (not like a knock, a bang). My two got louder and Hula, my foster, started barking LOUDLY and just sounded menacing, then I saw the guy run back out the gate. It was probably just some guy who thought that nobody would be home during the day. The dogs definitely got a special supper and extra cuddles that night though, I love having them around :D.

Let's see....
80lb, 29" Doberman bitch... check.
75lb, 26.75" Doberman dog... check.
YUP, I feel safe! Ilsa isa BIG girl, very territorial and raises helll whenever anyone comes to the door, and Ronin is a very suspicious dog - he happily scares off people that he detects "bad vibes" from.
It's currently 11pm, I'm alone in the house, and every door and window is open... gotta love red 'n' rust security systems!
BTW - Ilsa has already proven that she'll step up and not only protect me, but protect my property. At the tender age of 5-6 months, she backed an intruder into a corner.. the guy was terrifies of my VERY angry, bitty little Doberman puppy. She's also protected the house from a man who turned out to be a murderer/rapist. He tried to get into the back door of the house (running from the police), and Ilsa hit the door, roaring (scary sound, even the thought of it makes me get goosebumps!), ended up scaring him off of our deck, out of our yard, and into the arms of the police. That is definitely meaningful.. that a guy who had just raped and murdered a young woman would rather turn right aound and run towards the police than risk entering a house with an angry dog inside.
P.S. Ilsa put three cracks into the solid oak door when she hit it.. the largest being about 14 inches long.
Answer:
Hmm, I am VERY well protected.
A beagle and a 3 month old dobe pup.

:D
Yup watch out everyone.
I did feal protected with Sadie, who was a Malinios/Staffy cross.
Answer:
Barley makes me feel very protected. I remember on his 2nd day home, I woke up from a nap to his whining... I figured he wanted to go outside, so I took him out in a total haze. My husband came home and freaked out cause the house smelled like gas - only then did I realize that our oven's pilot light went out, and Barley woke me up to get me outside. I was still headachey that evening, but okay! And he was only 14 weeks old!
Answer:
yoshi makes me safe :) when i first moved back here everyone was like 'awww look at the little puppy' until she stood up and they realized the little puppy was a bit taller than they expected when looking at her face lol. but yoshi is a great watch dog. she only barks when someone is messing around my door. she also jumps up and barks and circles people if they enter without me getting up to greet them and invite them in. people who act suspicious around her get a couple growls and some teeth flashed, but yoshi would never attack unless they did something to me or kept coming at me
Answer:
Rocky's so stubborn and fearless I could have the Loch-ness monster, a werewolf, and the boogeyman at my door all at the same time and he'd still charge like nothing. The boogeyman's got nothin' on Rock.
Answer:
I feel safe. if nothing else the dogs alert me, and it would give me time to react if there was a real problem. Hammie isn't the least bit friendly to strangers. some people may not like that, but I do. once I tell him it's ok, then he settles....but he still watches every move. he is very, very protective of his mom. :) Addie loves everyone, but that little gal has such attitude when she wants. I think she has become more protective since having Ham covering her back. LOL
