Question:
On Sunday, the morning came and she was not her usual self. SHe wasnt sounding the 'alarm' and getting us up to let her do her buisness. She was reluctant to get out of her crate. Ears back, eyebrows raised, tail between her legs. WE automatically knew something was up. We pulled her out and watched her limp along, barely holding herself up. We carried her outside and she slowly walked over to the grassy area and did her thing but just stood there staring at us, shaking.
After a good 1/2 hour we decided to call the vet. The vets office was closed and referred us to a 'ER' facility. Needless to say, we took her over there to get to the bottom of her problem. After 2 hours of waiting for bloodwork, X rays we get a prognosis....Tummyache the idiot says..Great, okay so we pay the 300 bucks!!! for basically someone to tell us what we thought was the problem. But whatever, i just wanted to make sure she was ok.
Now, the day moves along, night comes and she eats very little and drinks no water unless we force it to her in a water bottle. Her back legs are getting worse and she is struggling to stand up straight.
Night passes, obviously we both didnt sleep too well considering what is going on with her.
This morning, she is totally listless. We pull her out of the cage and nudge her to walk and she falls on her face....this isnt a 'tummyache'!!!
My wife calls the 'ER' and basically tell her that if she wants the dog to be seen today it must be after 6 pm and another $77 for the visit must be paid plus whatever tests, xrays what have you are needed. WE ARE SO LIVID!!!
ANyhow, we took her to her regular vet, she is on antibiotics and an IV. The doctor said they are treating this symptomatically At first they thought it could be tick related due to i found her with one about a week ago. Theyve ran tests but cannot determine what is going on...The Doc mentioned it could be neurological.... But they are not sure, they just wish she can talk...CAn someone, anyone please shed some light on this or maybe a similar situation youve experienced. This is so nerve racking and has my anxiety disorder at a recent all time high.
Not only am i worried about her...but now im flat broke....and havent gotten the vets bill:mad:

first i'd suggest you talk to the "E.R." about their prognosis and the amount they charged to be WRONG.
is there any way she's been bitten by a snake? or accidentally hit her head or back? if she's not walking it sounds neurological. any way she got into some antifreeze???

The ER issue ireally dont even know how to address. My concern right now is Roxy and what is really going on. What exactly is a 'neurological' problem..Is this terminal or something that will not allow her to live a normal life...Im not getting to many answers right now and im really worried.
No snake bite that i know of. She did get into a bout...with a toad about two weeks ago..She crossed in front of me while i was carrying a box and bumped her head with my leg on Saturday, but thats nothing new. She always seems to be hovering around me:) . That was about early midday though...

Something else that I hate to even mention. I had a puppy for 1 and a half weeks in my home.......he got very sick! She passed away a few days later.
She was under vet care. To make a long story short I had his body tested for rabies and it came back positive. Now I had no history on the pup before he came to my house. And it is very rare for a pup to have this. I don't know where you live so it might not even be a concern. But just a thought to keep in the back of your mind in case the pup falls into a grave condition.
I am really sorry to even mention that. But if I would not have been very cautious in the death of my pup....it could have very well killed us too.

Roxy is a little over 1 year old. She does not have vomitting or diarrhea. Rabies is definately not an issue, she has some sort of paralysis in her hind leg, its like shes limping. She usually huffs down her food but is very slow in eating her food, she did eat but not all of it. And water is the big problem, if my wife dosent put it in her hand to drink, she wont drink out of her bowl. Its like we have to force feed the water to her, beccause of our fear of dehydration.
I know i wont get any answers but maybe some ideas or possible experiences that maybe some of you have gone thru that are similar.
I really am looking for a glimmer of hope to keep me from tossing me into depression. Ive got enough already.
The vet did say she is getting better but want to watch her for 48-72 hours and get her to ambulate.....But he keeps saying they dont know whats wrong.

I had a Lhasa that once seemed to be paralyzed in his rear legs. We woke up to diarrhea all over and he couldn't walk. We took him to emergency and after all the tests, they could only tell us he had a "stomach ache" (more or less). He did recover but it happened at least once again during his life time.

I am curious about where you live. You said your dog had a run-in with a toad about 2 weeks ago. There is a poisonous toad in Florida...although I believe that your dog probably wouldn't have lasted this long if it was this kind of toad.
The limping could be a back or neck problem, I suppose, and maybe she isn't eating or drinking because she is in pain. Maybe she can't bend her neck down to drink. I'm sure your Vet is checking all that out, though. Did your Vet put her on Prednisolone? I believe that is what they put my Lhasa on.
I am saying a prayer for your baby. Please keep us posted on her progress.

I know toads are different in Florida and WV but my dogs get into toads all the time and foaming at the mouth is what happens to my dogs too. It takes several minutes for it to stop. They don't even have to actually touch them, a smell is enough to start the juices flowing. But no long term effects.
I am so glad you have a thread of good news... At least she is not getting any worse. Maybe she injured her back, which someone mentioned. Did they take xrays?

I think, if my memory serves, the vet told my wife that they did numerous blood tests because some numbers didnt make sense.
All I'm asking for is a reason for all this. A cause. And obviously a pup brought back to normal living.

Last we heard at about 4pm she did look better than when she first came in but still no diagnosis. Their goal is to 'ambulate' or in lamens terms, make her walk/move around.

Dammit, we also live on a lake and at night you can hear these 'toads/frogs' making all kinds of noise...

Just spoke to the vet...She is fine and barking and moving around. They still dont know what hit her, maybe something viral that affected her neuro. SHe will be going home with the need for meds. I still havent seen her and will be leaving work early with the wife and going to pick her up!!:D
I am relieved that she is ok but am still bitter about what happened to us in the ER with bieng ripped off & a bit confused what could of caused this. KMH1 brought up the snail thing..we do have lots of snails because of the lake behind our house and possibly the pool...
I also read somewhere where cats were dying becaus of people using Mulch that was treated with arsenic..I just put in fresh mulch on saturday...

Now here comes the most bizarre part of this story so far.
While i was checking stuff out on the net during lunch, not dog related, i came accros some guy in some forum complaining about stray cats pooping in his yard and what have you. SOme smart ass recommended that he mulch his yard. Why you may ask, because red mulch has arsenic in it and apparantely some cats have died or have gotten Neuro damage in the guys area because of the arsenic.....
I WAS MULCHING SOME AREAS OF MY YARD ON SATURDAY....a day before she got sick, and i found some mulch in my room that was chewed up.
Now, the vet said that may have been what happened to her or maybe she got into a bofo toad or a blue skink that both are poisonous...anyhow the bottom line is that Roxy is ok, shes home and recouping and taking meds....
Now, off to recover my 300 bux that the friggin ER charged me for NOTHING!!!

My dogs chew on our mulch all the time, and never really thought about dangers. No problems yet, but I used cyprus mulce with no color.

My dog did this last year. I have written about it in other posts. Anyways, we never found out what was the matter with her. Some things I found out about Distemper is, the vaccine is not a sure thing. They can still get it even if they have had the vaccine. Do some reading on Distemper. There is no test to test for Distemper. Another thing, did this dog just get vaccinated? Do some reading on over vaccinating. Vets are finally starting to change the way they vaccinate. Has the dog been on any anibotics. My dog was alergic to Flagyl. It cause her to walk funny and knockle over on top of all the other stuff.

I have heard that all toads secrete a small amount of poison through their skins, not enough to harm most people, but my dogs always shy away from them, my mom said it's b/c they secrete it, and most dogs won't touch one at all- can your vet check out that possibilty also, so you'd know if maybe it was that? I know a couple years ago our cat had some nasty unidentifiable symptoms like this, after $$$ er care, she eventually got better, but we got no real answers.....
My best guess for my cat was too many chemicals- she was on frontline, dewormer, and i feel it was too much on her system at once. I haven't used frontline since then for her-
