..... Pit Bull pack mauls 2 dogs in OC

Question:
I'm tired of hearing these mauling stories..... I think those who own pitts/rotts/etc... should have some kind of license or something showing they are capable of handling/training this breed. These stories are a direct result of irresponsible owners who don't extinguish the problem at puppyhood.
What do you guys think?
Answer:
What really gets me, is, PITBULLS are not pack animals. Studies have been shown, they rarely act in "packs"
I hate it too, bunch of crap!
Ive got 2 adults and NEVER heard them growl even at a human.OR each other.
Answer:
I have a pit mix. Love him to death. He's not allowed outside unless he's in a fenced in enclosure or on leash. I don't give him the chance to act up...
I'd like to see the link to this article please.
Answer:
First of all, ALL dogs, which are canines, are pack animals. Yes, pitbulls have been driven away from their natural instincts and turned against their own kind but does not make them any special to say that they are not pack animals, to where every other dog out there is.
I think people should have some sort of license to carry a bigger type dog but that will lead to more discrimination towards specific breeds.

Answer:
What I hate is there is no way to Varify the breed before the media prints it. Take a look at some mastiffs, bull dogs, dogos and pits. Do you think the average person can actually tell the difference when they are panicking or even afterwards? Most of us have a hard time sometimes.

The guy said it was pit bulls from his yard.... one would hope that he would know what kind of dogs he had in his back yard...

It makes sense to me. Why not licenses for certain breeds? Drivers are licensed, while cyclists are not. That's not because drivers are bad people or because cars are inherently bad. It's because a car has the destructive potential a bike can only dream about. Same with dogs. The nastiest Cocker or Chihuahua has nowhere near the destructive potential of a Rottweiler or a pit bull.
These stories are a direct result of irresponsible owners who don't extinguish the problem at puppyhood.
I think a lot of these stories are the result not so much of irresponsibility as of actual malevolent, malicious action. The breeds you mention attract vicious people. When they're not busily abusing the dogs themselves, they often find ways to 'accidentally' loosen the dogs upon the surrounding community. Weeding these people out of the ranks of ownership would go a long way toward healing the reputation of many breeds.

Excuse me? Not everyone who owns a pit bull or a pit mix is a vicious person. I proudly own a pit mix and am very responsible regarding his welfare and the welfare of others. And if you make it illegal to own a dog, do you think the criminals who ALREADY OWN them, or going to STOP owning them? That all of the sudden they are jsut going to become law abiding citizens in this one little matter?
Please.
Answer:
I think you took it the wrong way.... all CASABLANCA1 said was "it attracts vicious people" ..... which I would have to agree as well. I don't think it was meant that people who own them are vicious people.
Answer:
Just what we need, MORE GOVERNMENT . . . like that's ever fixed anything people
We don't know if the man who owns the property the dogs were on left the gate open, if someone in his family did, or if it was someone like a meter-reader or if it was done maliciously.
In the newscast he says only one dog is his, the other three belong to a friend and he was keeping them temporarily as a favor.

I have to agree.. not EVERYONE who owns a pit or pit mix is out to worsen the breed. It's not fair to stereotype when you in fact have NO IDEA.
Answer:
I personally LOVE the breed and if My family were more open to one I would have one. Everything that makes them a good fighter makes them a great family pet and competitor.
I take pride in making a "horable and mean spirited" breed into a loving member of society.
It makes sense to me. Why not licenses for certain breeds?
Thats a form of BSL. So I take it you support that. It's called discrimination!
Answer:
I agree with the license thing. I will be getting a rottie in the future, and I would be happy to get a license for that. If it cuts down on all of these attacks and keeps these breeds out of the wrong hands, why not? It might be discrimination, but lets face it... rotties, pits, GSDs, akitas, and other large breeds can do some serious damage. It would be like a loaded gun in the wrong hands... not good! Its better than banning them, which is whats going to happen if something is not done.
Answer:
but lets face it... rotties, pits, GSDs, akitas, and other large breeds do some serious damage
Exactly. Why does it have to be a breed thing and not a any breed over x lbs has to have a lisence thing?
Answer:
If you're going to license one, license ALL.
But why invite more goverment into our lives? When has that ever solved anything?

I agree that is should be all about weight, not breed.

Thus, making the pitbull NOT a pack animal. Do you want me to gather all my lit??
Answer:
It's coming down to one of these 2 situations soon:
A. License "larger" dogs.
B. Make it illegal to have a pit/rott/etc..
I'd opt for the license... before the GOVT ends up banning them anyways.

Ok. Here's a situation. Guns are banned in my area and most places and in other places you need a lincense. But who has the majority of guns, the BAD guys. They always have ways of getting around things and now because of the bad guys, us good citizens cannot protect ourselves with a gun from the bad guys, but they still have the guns. They will find ways to get around it, and linscencing is only going to make it more difficult for those who are responsible owners of larger breeds.
Renee, I agree with you 100%, why let the gov't control another aspact of our lives, by the time you know it the U.S would be just like Cuba, a Dictatorship rather than a democracy.
Answer:
If they make it illegal not just BSL then that will suck. I know a few Rottie owners who actually use them for their intended purpose. Hearding.

To butt in a bit... It's funny, I was thinking of the parallels to the gun argument. My problem is that while the theory of the right to bear arms and own any dog breed you like is sound, in practice, the reality is that all guns and certain dogs attract huge numbers of people who routinely cause trouble and expense in our society.

How about instead of banning things we just kill the people who abuse those things?
It'd probably work better in the long run.

I'm with you. I don't WANT the government regulating what kind of dog I can have, whether or not I need a license for one, etc. The government controls enough - I want it to leave my dogs alone entirely. The "dog bite problem" is not nearly as severe as people think it is - how many people are killed every year by dog attacks?

That's unfortunate about the dogs that were attacked. Poor things. :(

I saw a bumper sticker today that raised an interesting parallel:
If guns cause crime, do matches cause arson?

Maybe we should go for option #3 . . . TAKE BACK OUR GOVERNMENT!
(Okay, I'm sure that little outburst just got me on a Homeland [In]Security watch list somewhere) ;)

It really isn't as bad as people think. There is only about 12 human fatalities each year due to dog attacks. To me thats nothing. You have a better chance of getting eaten by a shark in lake.

Answer:
I have stated before that I feel ALL dogs should be licensed . They used to be. Very small yearly fee.....I may have been the only one in my county to register. Fees for my un spade and un neutered dogs were more. Add to this that if a dog had their CGC it would be the lowest. This would hit bad breeders and bad owners in the pocket book. When my next door neighbor took in an X fighter pitt....he was tied out with huge chain to dog house. He was people friendly but hated dogs. They weren't fenced in and when Chip was out with me, he went over to say " hi"....luckily he came back when I yelled at him, as at the same time, the pitt lunged to wards him with such a force it moved his dog house ! Had they connected, Chip would have been toast....me too as I would have headed in to it. I've never seen Chip growl or fight, so I know he wouldn't have known what to do and would have been riped apart. AND --- it would have been MY fault !

do u have the exact link? im a day late and tried a search for it on the site but cant find it
Answer:
most of the places where dog licenses are required, they're not enforced anyway. most of the places where leash laws are on the books, they're not enforced. heck, we can't even ensure that dogs aren't being beaten, killed, and starved to death, or fought for that matter. all of this dog law on the book.... and yet it's not being enforced.
how are new laws going to help?
if a dog has teeth, it can bite. if a dog is not owned responsibly, it is at a higher risk to bite. it's the *responsibility* part that we need emphasis on, not the breed part.
you know what's really interesting? in all the time that fatal dog bite statistics have been kept, they haven't changed. back in the 60s, pit bulls were not the "bad breed of choice". it wasn't until recently that the breed has become hugely popular, hugely overbred, etc. the number of dogs in the US has increased astronomically. but the number of people being killed by dogs every year? nope. no significant change.
breed specific legislation DOES NOT WORK. it's as simple as that.
i think the winnipeg bite stats link (http://www.doglegislationcouncilcanada.org/WinnipegBites.htm) is absolutely fascinating. pit bulls were banned in 1990. and yet, for several years after the ban, the number of bites increased.
lots of dogs of all breeds bite. emphasis on obedience training, responsible dog ownership of *all* breeds, and teaching children how to not get bitten by a dog would go much further than restricting/licensing/discriminating.
Answer:
First we just need to enforce the laws we already have on animal abuse, neglect and fighting. Enforcing these laws will help to weed out bad owners.
If you want licenses, I think it should be Licenses for HUMANs to own a dog. If you can't afford or know how to take care of a dog you should not have one. Whether is be a toy poodle or a Fila. If you prove to be unable to control or provide care for a dog your "Privledge" should be revoked.
Every day I see dogs abused and neglected and it sickens me. Most of these cases of dog attacks are the direct result of neglect and ignorance.
There are not more dog attacks these days just more media coverage. The word pit bull will keep people watching until after the commerical so it will make the news every time.
