Do dogs smile ?

Question:
I made a comment on another thread about my dog smiling and afterwords was wondering what everyones thoughts were on dogs 'smiling'. A lot of people have met Casey and thought she was snarling where as others have said something along the lines of "look she's smiling at me". I once read somewhere on the internet that smiling was a sign of nervousness but I didn't think that was true, she only does it to say hi to people or to us when we arrive home ect. What do you all think?
Here are some pics anyway,

My Pup Dusty smiles and smirks all the time, such as when it's time to go out and he knows it and I take my time. Or when we're about to load him in the car for a ride he'll smile/smirk. Don't have any pictures of it though, sadly it's rather hard for me to have a camera handy when he does do it.
Answer:
Wish I had a good with me at work, Heck ya they smile.
Answer:
Yeah it was hard to get pics of her doing it, I'm glad to hear Dusty smiles as when I read the comment on the internet about it being a sign of nervousness I was slightly anxious. I know she's not nervous but it made me wonder why she did it, as I always thought when wolves show their teeth and snarl its a sign of aggression so I figured it would be the same for a dog (even though you can tell by her eyes she isn't being aggressive I just wondered why?).

I don't ask why, as I will never fully comprehend exactly what's going through my dogs head. I just ignore it as I know he's not being aggressive or anything. I think the one time animal control came by to visit us he smiled at the officer who visited.
Answer:
OMIGOSH!!! That's DEFINITELY a SMILE!!!!! What a sweet GIRL!!!! That is just so cute. Hunter will "grin"... corners of mouth turned up like the Joker when he hasn't seen Mamma for awhile and I'm kissing on him. Sometimes I can get a full blown smile like your baby in the mornings when I'm in the bathroom getting ready for work and he comes up wanting me to leave fast so he gets his dog biscuit
That's a SMILE and I've always known dogs smile, too!!!
Answer:
Thanks for the reply :). I love her smile, it makes me smile when I see her doing it. I was just curious to see how many other dogs do it as I've only ever seen 2 other dogs smile. So I guess I can add your dog to my list :D.

BAD Girl with those Billy-Bob teeth !!!! BTW... dear girl ... I wish you'd put a happier picture of Hunter in your avatar. He looks like you just left the house with one of your island boys !!! I've got to get a picture of Chip in, though you can see his smile by the chair with Nash.... all the rest are of Bubba.
Answer:
I read somewhere that since dog's are so cued to body language and adaptive in nature, they will smile with thier teeth like that, because that's how we smile. They are imitating us when we're happy.
Sawyer's teeth don't show when he smiles, but you can still tell. Photobucket is down, so I can't just put the single pic, but here it is. Second one down: http://www.chazhound.com/forums/showpost.php?p=207339&postcount=2

YES..they sure do. I had my camera...Hammie was just sitting there..I said, 'smile, Ham'....and he did. I know realistically this may never happen again, but I laughed for 20 minutes! it is my favorite pic. his true name is Hamlin........but HAM certainly suits him. this is a close-up of the pic in my signature. it shows the true him when he is with me. http://photobucket.com/albums/v476/debijean2/smile.jpg

That's about what Dusty does, sometimes he'll only smile on one side, which is why I call it a smirk then.
Answer:
my brothers chespeke bay smiles whenever shes excited
Answer:
i have always thought that dogs smiled, and tho what i thought was smiling was always quite subtle, it always happened when the dog was either out of breath/tired, or just lazing about. i've never seen teeth in the smiles that i've seen. when you do see teeth, it does kind of look like a snarl.
Answer:
Well I don't have it right now, but when I get this roll of Film developed I will. Not too long ago I got a picture, probably not too good, of Dusty smirking.

Dakota is always smiling, but sometimes he'll just curl up his lips and GRIN. My avatar is one of those moments. He does it often, but that's the only picture I have of it. Border Collies learn very well by imitation, I wouldn't doubt that he picked it up from humans.
Chessies are SMILERS! My friend has a Chessie and a Lab/Chessie mix and both greet you with every tooth in their mouth showing.
Answer:
LOL That's cute! Charlie smiles like that too.:D

My Doberman, Winston, smiles too but in his case it's a breed trait. I never have the camera near me when he does it though so no pics...
Answer:
uhhh everyone here seems to like dog smiles, especially showing off teeth, so why do they scare me so much?
edited to add
I hear snarling and growling in my head when i look at the pictures, that may be why
Answer:
nobody wants to answer my question? :( i will cry
Answer:
Yes they do look like snarls, but when you see a dog in person, you can observe the other body language they are exhibiting. I knew an English Springer Spaniel that smiled. Her body posture was very relaxed, not tense like it would be if she were being agressive.
Those teeth scare you because you know that baring teeth usually means ANGRY. But it can mean other things too.
Answer:
thankee for answering
Answer:
Not only have i seen them smile at appropriate times, i have been laffed at too on more then one occasion. http://www.chazhound.com/pictures/showphoto.php?photo=5751&cat=500&ppuser=2623 is a prime example. I didn't even know she was laughing at me and the situation was ludicrous until i got the pic back and blew this up from the background. Sally mary sister laughed at me once when tripped and fell splat on the deck, she smiled and ran circles around me while making a huffing sound.

Ebony used to smile with her teeth once in a while, but more often she'd do the regular tongue lolling out smile. ;)
Dalmations are apparently very prone to smiling . . . most often in apology after having been caught doing something naughty. ;)
Answer:
You can tell in her eyes she's not growling.. thats definitely a smile.. :)
