So angry!!

Question:
i just ran to petsmart with one of my friends and i tookyoshi with me and we went through with no problem. when i was in line to check out this lady was there with her yorkie and she checked out and left. while she had been there the cashier lady had stood and doted on her dog. when i got up to the front she was like 'what kind of dog is that?' motioning toward yoshi. and i was like 'well she's a mix i got her from the animal shelter.' and then she goes 'oh well i bet you wish you had a pure breed dog instead of a second hand dog after seeing that yorkie don't you?' gah it made me so mad i just paid and walked off and didn't say anything
Answer:
:(
So sad..... for shallow people purebred dogs=status symbols.
I love the look of a purebred dog, I admit that, but I value the companionship of dogs more than anything else.
Ya know.... as I think about it... I might just complain to the manager of that store if I were you. Petsmart is supposed to be pro-rescue. I am sure they wouldn't want their employees disparaging rescued animals.
Answer:
What a jerk!! It's none of her business what kind of dog you have, and mutts happen to be excellent dogs. I have a purebred dog, and I love her to death, I love the breed (I love my girl best though), but I also have two mutts and I love them to death too. They're all wonderful companions and I love 'em.
Answer:
How rude!! It reminds me of the time I went to petsmart to get my rottie a prong collar. In the process of putting the colar in the plastic bag, the bag got caught on the colar and it ripped open. The cashier says... "what an evil thing!". Now that made me mad. The employees can be rude at times!!
Answer:
i think i will talk tothe manager. it's just when it hapened i was so mad i just left instead of doing anythig
Answer:
That is really rude! I have heard similar comments about Pixie and its really hard for me to bite my tounge.
Answer:
Ahhh another idjut member of this so called human race.
I understand your anger, but you know what I would do?
I would ignore what was said, look into my mutt's eyes and say to him, you are beautiful just how you are.
She unfortunately probably doesn't know the true love that a dog can give, but rather its heritage or title. That makes for a very shallow, sad person
You and your dog are better than that. Lift your head high and treat her and her comments as insignificant :)
Answer:
WOW thats is pretty bizarre...eh some people just couldnt even buy a clue
Answer:
That's just awful. I would have asked for the manager right there and explained how the rude and ignorant employee had offended you and cost his store the sale - loudly, and not given them any trade....
Or maybe you should have said OK I'll take the bet- $500, then told her she'd lost and to pay up!
The whole concept referring to a dog as 'second hand' like that - especially to a caring owners face - stinks - aren't dogs about caring, companionship etc not fashion items, status possesions, $$$ etc ???
Answer:
Well, you know mutts are worthless. The only good dog is a purebred.
That was sarcasim by the way.
I would have told the manager, get her in trouble. There was NO excuse for what she said to you.
Answer:
You should call the manager right now. I would have set her straight. Just because that dog is a Yorkie and he's cute doesnt mean anything really. Theres a lot more to a dog than whether is purebred. I guess it doesnt matter to most people whether its a brother/sister pup or not. Thats just sick to me. I have a purebred cocker, and a i have a jackapoo (Aka mut) I love both of them.
Answer:
missed an oportunity to educate..next time instead of walking away..glorify
Answer:
How rude!!!! Who CARES what breed your dog is except maybe you want the name because you don't recognize it. I'm sorry the clerk was so rude to you. She obviously has no clue
Answer:
OMG, how rude was that?!?! I would have spat back, "my dog is the best dog in the world and excuse me if I saved a poor soul from a shelter, and I don't care about how much I paid for my dog!" That is just so rude...I bet she would have thought that my two mutts were absolutly worthless then because we didn't pay a dime for them! Because quality=price, you know? *sarcasm*
Answer:
No good sone of a gun I say.
My response would have been. "Its a normal dog, lady. Dont go off the wall on me because she not a freaking pure-bred. AND YORKIES SMELL BAD!!"
Answer:
here is what i would have said..come on folks you get more flies with honey...."really well i bet you wouldnt' think that way if you just knew my dog a little better.(smile and laff a little) .i tell you she is just a miracle on 4 paws.(beaming look of appriciation of my little dog) .i have never owned such an easy dog to train.(demonstrate latest learned tricks) .etc etc etc ..until the clerk learned something. Then maybe becuase you didn't try to put her down..or make her have a bad day, or punish her for being ignorant, you might have..
1 opened her mind a little
2 she might have enlightened her co workers..u know the neatest little dog
came thru my line today! ANd
to think she adopted it from
a kill sheter.....................
THat is what i would have done..and i bet you two things
one her earlier statement might never be repeated
and she might just spread the word..i can almost totally bet on that.
why why why why must you all be so negative all the time:(
Answer:
Ya know, smkie, you're quite right!!! It's so easy to get angry - so difficult to remain calm and actually try to educate someone :p
I will definitely try to remember that next time I might be able to use it :)
Answer:
thanks..Victor thanks you too! he is a two time rescue sos dog...we will be doing the humane society fund raiser on tv march 12. I never ever waste the opportunity to say how grateful i am to petsaver.com and Connie guthrie with save_our_strays! She kept track of the kill shelters and who is about to be pts. She drives there and takes them to her own kennel, at a huge amount of self sacrifice and overload of work she tries to get them adoptable or give them more time. SHe saved Victor, he would be very dead if it wasn't for her, and so would the 100+ that she and her team have saved, she is now i St. Louis continuing her good works. And he Is a miracle on 4 paws. He looks like a pure bred and he very well might be, but it wouldn't matter if he was one thousand percent mixed heritage, i would say and do exactly the same thing. I have spent a lot of time working with the public in the past so it comes a little easier for me to think in this way, especially when working with young dog owners and people that are not as experienced with animals as i am.
I had a little pet rat once i called her the ambassador of Good Will for All Rodents. She was so smart and loving, even my sister in law that gets horrors from the mere thought of a rat let her in her house.
JUst if people would think for a second before they react, that there is always another approach to any situation, and taking a more positive route will almost always get the better result. The clerk wont be mad and go home and snap at the kids because she got yelled or made to feel bad about work, she will go home and tell them a story about this neat little dog..

I would have slapped that b****.
Answer:
When I was about 10 years old, I had a couple of mutts. I had a friend with a supposed purebred Springer Spaniel. She bragged and bragged and made such a fuss over the fact that she had a purebred. (looking back, I don't think it was. lol) Anyhow, my dear older brother, always sticking up for me, always slinging an arm over my shoulder (I not so long ago, sadly lost him to a brain tumor) told me to tell her that Bruno was a purebred Peruvian Pinscher. He just made up that name. I've always thought that was such a riot.
So, you could always make up a really exotic sounding name and tell someone like that that your dog....your "Peruvian Pinscher" is so exotic, so rare that they're almost extinct and you own the only one in this hemisphere. LOL.
Answer:
I don't give a hoot for purebred dogs. I have always had mutts, have 3 now, and I couldn't love them any more if they were "purebred". I know that purebred dogs are often inbred and have a higher incidence of genetic defects; ie, hip dysplasia. Actually, I understand that mixed breed dogs are healthier.
How ridiculous that someone thinks her dog is better because he/she is "purebred".

Answer:
Thats terrible :(. A dod is a dog whether it's a mutt or a purebreed. Well done for holding your tongue I doubt I would have .
Answer:
wow!! everyone always comments on how beautiful oakley is...maybe its cause my mutt is better than your mutt!???? jk jk jk!! when i go to petco, there are always mixed breeds....not as many purebreds, so i bet that has a lot to do with it....
smkie is SO right though, while its fun to come on here and bash away...dont actually go say that to the person cause all it will do is further prove to herself that mixes are bad - cause i am sure a spastic, bitchy owner is gonna make the dog look worse in that teeny brain of hers, lol
kill with kindness :) but you should definately do something about it...mention how overjoyed you are to have rescued one of the (insert number here) homeless dogs in the world, who just need love, and are willing to give you unconditional love back in return, be there by your side, and help you through hard times and good times! i know im always proud to mention how i got oakley, it makes me all emotional when i do, lol, knowing he was going to be euthanized, and what a terrible life he had....and now knowing how loved and spoiled he is!!! make that byatch realize how ignorant she was being...not to mention that is some BAD business for the store!!
Answer:
I like the short blunt response, delivered in a monotone, non-confrontational manner that borders on bewilderment: "Wow. What a rude person you are to insult my dog to my face." Simple and to the point.
Answer:
Mutts or pruebreds it doesn't matter. They are all living breathing beautiful animals. How dare that Lady! I know my dogs are members of the family(as I'm sure yours are too) and would feel like they were insulting my child. I would report that person! Especially since they are supposed to be helping animal shelters! They host adoptions their all the time.
Answer:
I would not have been as kind as you...
I def. would have said something... Nobody insults my dog!
In the future you should educate these shallow people on the need for more people to rescue dogs.
Enjoy your dog... Love is all that counts... Elissa
Answer:
Amazing. My local petstores seem tuned to cute/massive scale of adoration. If you bring in a Yorkie or a Mastiff, the checkers fall over themselves cooing. There's no purebred/mutt discrimination.
I used to have the opposite problem, oddly enough. My first dog was, we thought, a mutt. A beautiful, adorable shaggy mutt who people would actually slow their cars to look at and yell "She's gorgeous!" Which was only her due. But several times, people asked, "Is that a Bearded Collie?" and I'd think, "goofy people, there is no such thing as a Bearded Collie." Which of course there is, and when I finally realized it I saw that it was her to a t.

Answer:
I would certainly said something to a manager! Not the right person for that job!!

Answer:
You could always act like you didn't hear what she said and make her repeat it... several times... maybe she'll get it.
"i'm sorry, i got distracted, what did you say?"
"blah blah blah...?"
"oops, my bad, what was that again?"
"BLAH BLAH Bllalhh... "
by the third time she might have actually thought about what she said and shut up.
Answer:
katt you are a master of passive aggressive
Answer:
well here's the update. today i took yoshi in and went up to the manager. i told them that i wasn't angry any more i just wanted them to know what happened. i said i just wanted them to atleast inform the person about how i felt so they'd know not to say it in front of someone else again. i said i worked at a restaurant and knew how someone could accidentally say something and have a customer misinterpret them. they thanked me for telling me what happened and gave yoshi a free toy :)
