Question:
i am in chile and have to return to the states much quicker than anticipated. machuca is a 4mth black lab. we have never used a crate, but she is going to have a 9 hour leg on our flight to the states on the 19th. i bought the crate today and want her to get used to it before the flight. can you please give me instructions on how to have her acustumbrado to her crate by the 19th? thanks!! you all are always soo helpful
Answer:
1) use it. Right away. For sleeping, napping, etc.
2) do a search on crate training, and read up.
I correct all vocalizations in the beginning. It helps to feed the puppy in the crate also so there are positive associations with it.
If you are persistent, the puppy should be fairly well accustomed to the crate by the time of the flight.
Answer:
get some really yummy treats and very, very interesting toys. ideally something that will keep him busy for a little while, like pieces of a bully stick, or stuffed kong toys.
show then to your puppy, put them in the crate and shut the door. let him be frustrated for a little while because he can't get to them, then open the door, let him in and close it behind him while he is enjoying the goodies.
repeat as often as you can and slowly increase the time he's confined after finishing his treats before starting to crate him for longer periods.
Answer:
I agree with the above.... Make sure to put the crate in area she usually naps or sleeps. Put her bedding in too ! Also, make sure there's a rug or something under the crate so it won't rattle etc and scare her. She'll need water during the trip, so also attach the bottle so she gets the idea. You might put a little chicken broth in at first so she gets the idea. Don't rush her, or leave her in too long ! You don't want her to be frightened. Good Luck !!! Let us know how it's going before the flight !!
Answer:
