Question:
I have a 11 year old female lab. She is on a decongestant for incontinence and because of the leakage problem her vagina was very red and irritated. My vet called it vulvanitis. My vet had her on antibiotics for that. Her incontinence seems to be under control but there is this foul odor. I can't tell if it's coming from the vulvanitis, her anal glands or possibly the decongestant pills making her poop stink. Any thoughts?
Answer:
Never heard of using a decongestant for incontinence. Do you mean the PPA pills? Perhaps you have more than one problem going on here. I have also never heard of the redness etc due to it either.
Is she spayed?
Answer:
Yes it is the PPA pills...50mg twice a day. My dog went too long with the dribbling before I caught it and it got so bad that it made her vagina really red and irritated. My vet called it vulvanitis. So he had her on antibiotics to clear that up. But boy does she smell!
Answer:
I did some research and phenylpropanolamine or PPA was used in a lot of cold medicines as a decongestant.
Answer:
Never heard that one before. It was the main ingredient in Dexitrim for weight loss & as such was removed from the market several years ago.
In my experience the PPA's are a godsend but seem to work better on males than females.
So is she spayed? If not - get her back to the vet asap. Could be a pyometra
Answer:
I'm sorry I forgot that you had asked if she was spayed. Yes she is. My vet told me alot of older female spayed dogs get incontinence. Maybe it's her anal glands. My vet asked me if I wanted to learn how to do that. I do everything for my dog but I think I draw the line on that one!
Answer:
That could well be the cause. They REALLY stink if they scoot enough to open them. But they can stink just if the need expressed too. You can also take her to a groomer to express them.
They usually do a lot of scooting when the glands need done, however with her age I would guess she is somewhat arthritic so may not be able to do that. I have never noticed any odor from the PPA.
Yeah, not something ya'd want to do before breakfast!!!!
Answer:
I rarely see her scooting. I walk her almost everyday so she is still quite energetic and doesn't seem to have arthritis at all...not like her owner!
Answer:
here's for both of you

Sue runs for cover cause she knows "the stalker" will find this!!
Answer:
Thanks for the info. I took that stuff for awhile and didn't notice any difference. A chiropractor told me several years ago that I have a degenerative disk. You know how that goes....they have you coming to them for years and years. My doctor had me on Flexeril for my sciatica and it used to clear it up but doesn't seem to help anymore. I can't hardly turn over in the middle of the night and I'm only 49. My doctor wanted to send me for physical therapy but I'm pretty sure they will have me do the same exercises and stretching that my chiropractor had me doing. I really think I need a MRI of my back. Doesn't probably help that I've been cleaning people's houses for 15 years.
Answer:
Well, I guess you could try "the stalkers" Ester-C along with the combo. I had phenomonal results with just the combo.
Hmmm cleans houses huh? Not in FL are you? Of course - thus the cleanqueen. duh!
Answer:
Sorry not in Florida. I'm in the Pittsburgh area. I've heard of Ester-C but what is the combo? Do you mean a combination of the glucosamine and Ester-C together? I'm not familiar with Ester-C so what does it do for you? I'm on a really low dose of high blood pressure medicine because I get really bad headaches (dr doesn't know if it's the HBP giving me the headaches or the headaches giving me the HBP) so I'm real leary about mixing different things with my Lopressor. Have you ever heard of a compound pharmacist? I was watching Dr. Phil one day and his wife went to one and got on a regimen of vitamins and everything. I've put on 10 pounds and I'm short so that's like 25 and have been trying to get it off with walking and my elliptical machine....slow process. Whatever Dr. Phil's wife is doing is definitely working for her. She looks great for over 50!
Answer:
Yes, by combo I meant the glucosimine, chondrioten, MSM. And HMZ uses them all together. I don't know what to tell you as for mixing with what ever you are already taking.
Yes, on the compound pharmacist. They are everywhere & make things up specifically to order.
You can google Ester-C I do know several people that swear by it.
Answer:
Just call me the Ester C Queen. Good for humans too.
