Question:
I have a friend whose dog is terrified of going to the vet. Sadly he's become very ill and will have to be put down in the next few days or weeks. Due to his fear and the desire for him to go peacefully, they would like to do it at home. They called their vet and were told it's not possible. They live in Sacramento, CA. Can anyone give me any insight into finding someone who will do in home euthanasia?
Answer:
I am sure in a city as big as Sacremento, there is a vet that will do this for them. Have them call around.
Answer:
I am surprised their vet will not do this. Many vets will. However if they can't find one, their vet should and easily could give an oral sedative that will make things sooo much easier for the dog... so he can be transported for that final trip to the vet without fear.... This is a rough enough thing to deal with and their vet should be willing to work things out with them...wishing them all good luck and peace of mind and heart.
Answer:
Their vet not only told them he couldn't do it but that it wasn't possible. Something tells me he's not going to be very helpful. They had just hoped to go to someone they felt comfortable with but it looks like they'll have to look around.
Answer:
It is possible there is a law forbidding a vet from taking the drugs out of his office. If that is the case then he is correct. It's not possible, but he certainly could have explained that.
Look in the yellow pages for mobile vets & call one & ask.
Call AC or a shelter & ask. Many do euthanasia for JQP & may make a house call if it is legal to do so.
Answer:
Im sorry to hear about your friend hon.
Most cities towns do not allow anyone to do this outside of a vets office. It is unfortunate but true and in the long run it is the better way of doing it. What a vet may be able to do is to stop by the home and sedate the dog abit so that it is not too upset by being taken in to the vets office. See if they can arrange that.
Answer:
Sounds like that vet is not willing to make much effort at all.....and not sure if it is all because of legalities! He just sounds like he does not want to bend. They might be much better off checking around and in their pain, they may end up finding a new vet who is truly compassionate... I wish them luck and ease of heart's pain.........
Answer:
If you can't find another vet, try an animal shelter... they sometimes do it for less money than the vet.
Answer:
That vet sounds ridiculous. Sacramento is right next to UC-Davis, a top vet school! Surely that place has some suggestions. There are also rural areas nearby and vets routinely go to visit livestock and other animals. It should be possible to find someone in that particular area. There may be laws and regulations about euthanizing a dog but you should be able to find someone sympathetic to the situation.
Answer:
Vets that treat horses HAVE to go out of the office.... find one of those vets. I used to have horses, vets had to come to us. There are vets that will go out of office to treat large animals, certainly there must be one somewhere near you that would. Keep calling around.
