My adopted greyhound

Question:
My beloved greyhound, Carbon is dying of bone cancer. He is only 7 years young and I've only had the pleasure of loving him for a little over 2 years. He raced and was at the track for almost 5 years.
His pain med is at max. He is showing signs of extreme pain in his hind leg where the nasty cancer is eating away at his bone. He went to get on the couch the other day and whined really bad. I broke down and just bawled. He barely puts weight on it now and is having a hard time just on the two steps on the deck to go outside. Yet he comes in the house and runs and grabs his squeaky toy and wags his tail, he still wants to follow me around the house. I know he is hurting, but when is enough enough. Everyone says that I will know, how will I know?? I can't stand to see him like this and I don't want him to suffer, but I also don't want to cut him short either. I just don't know! Any thoughts?? He is eating fine also.

Answer:
I am so very sorry to hear this. We lost our German Shepherd Search and Rescue dog to bone cancer. Vida was only four years old when it hit her, I cannot and will not make this decision for you but I will tell you what we went through. Vida was not a candidate for amputation of the leg which is the operation of choice. She had severe hip dysplasia and it would not have worked. The operation is also a last hope. Bone cancer is painful and it metatizes rapidly. By the time we caught it, it had already spread to Vida's stomach and she started to hemmorage. We never even knew she had it! She was a very tough stoic dog who never let on she hurt. She hemmoraged during the night, we took her in to the vet in the morning, found out about the bone cancer and how far it had spread and she was PTS. She was suffering a great deal......and we never knew! And the night before this happened, she was running around the house playing!!! So search your heart and talk to him What does Carbon want? Is his quality of life good or not? Is he suffering? Are you keeping him here for you or for him? Whatever you decide though, know that you will find friends here to help you..........
